Rated 6/10

Rated 6/10

I can’t believe this album is now 20 years old!!

I used to love this, so I am looking forward to giving it another listen, its been a long time. Slow night, so long is great. Its the KOL era I know and love before the haircuts and pop. KOL should have stayed this way.

Its a good album, nothing more than a 3/5

Favourite song: King of the rodeo and Bucket
Least favourite: Milk
Album artwork: Cool cover

Rated 4/10

This was utter garbage. This took place prior to the album that garnered them their career (Only By the Night). This album was terrible. No fucking idea what the singer said in the 38 minute runtime of this album. He just mumbled stuff about getting banged as far as I know. Absolute pinnacle of indie garbage

Favourite songs: Pistol of Fire

Least favourite songs: Milk

I never liked this band. This album sucks. The vocals are not good.

I fell asleep :/

Rated 4/10

This is a good illustration of how tastes change - I used to quite like this album, but I find it a mostly tiresome listen now. Most of that is due to the singer's voice, which is really irritating. The music itself isn't too bad; some pretty strong songs, vocals excepted.

Rated 8/10

This is my favourite KoL album, I think KoL early albums are very underrated, this is clearly offset by how overrated sex on fire and use somebody are, I can see why they get a lot of hate.

But I think this is the one album you should listen to to get what KoL were about before having a go at arena rock, it’s not a masterpiece but a soild 4/5 album.

Rated 1/10

Tempted to call them "mid", but that'd be a cowardly way to avoid saying they suck. Aggressively, insultingly boring.

Rated 8/10

I'm one of those sickos who doesn't mind the song Sex on Fire, but I completely understand why it seems to be the bane of those listening to rock radio in the mid-2000s. However, this seems to be a bit more bluesy, and while that isn't usually my cup of tea, this has a similarity to other garage rock acts of the 2000s such as the Strokes where I actually enjoy it a little bit. His voice takes some adjusting, but the grooves are all accounted for, and while it can be repetitive, no song is ever with you for more than four minutes, so it flies by. This is an album I can appreciate just for its respect of the listeners time and energy level. I wouldn't say it has something for everyone, but it seems just safe enough to be cool, Summer vibes, and I can vibe along with it.

Rated 6/10

talented group of musicians but no identity.

Rated 8/10

Solid, if unspectacular, country and folk influenced southern rock. Not as urgent as their debut, and not as immediate as the follow up, but a fun, catchy, raucous and perhaps slightly overlooked work. A very solid 4 🌟 in my book!

Meh

Rated 4/10

They obviously had a unique sound, but this is just so basic, like someone took The Strokes and aged them by about 30 years and made them much more boring. And The Strokes were already pretty boring.

Rated 4/10

Their first album was so good that this was so disappointing in comparison, so disappointing that it would take them a few years to even come close to the highs of that first album in their 4th album. This just sounds to bland and by the numbers that absolutely nothing stands out or is relistenable and I'm shocked that many critics rated it so highly.

Yet another ex-1001 album!™

As an album, it's mediocre at best. The Bucket was my only highlight (only because I knew of it), but that wasn't enough to save me from boredom. 1.5

Rated 6/10

It was fine. Some of the songs I liked, a bunch I didn't. Probably won't play again anytime soon.

Rated 8/10

Ah, early Kings of Leon. How I've missed you. As a review once memory put it "a vocalist who sounds like he's gargling rock". I loved these guys first couple of albums, there was something very raw and gritty about them (plus, bonus fact, possibly the SWEATIEST gig I ever went to on a boiling hot London night at the Astoria). Yes, they went on to become stadium rock superstars, but the bluesy rock of the first couple of albums - magical.

Rated 4/10

There really is nothing wrong with this album and I don't dislike it al all, but if you put it among the giants on the rest of this 1001 list, this really feels like a pretty tame and barely decent indie rock album.
Musically it is quite well put together, even though rhythmically nor musically it can hardly be called adventurous.
And after these 3 listens in the last day, this album goes back in its case, likely never to be listened to again.

Some interesting riffs but goddamn is that man singing in English or??? 35 minutes felt like 70. Pro tip: drop the “pipes”, it’s much better when he’s not signing. 2/5 would not listen to again.
