Divorced Dad-Core: Country Edition

There's definitely a sexist double standard when I sit here and praise/sing along with country songs by women who talk about killing their exes, but then recoil at Dwight here doing the same, but the recognition of that double standard does not make it better for me. Bro, she cheated on you. Just cut her loose and move on. You don't need to kill her execution style, you fucking psycho.

But yeah, on top of the awful, misogynistic lyrics, you got bog-standard, stereotypical country music with the twangiest of the twanged out vocals. I've heard the music from this album a billion times before. About the only redeeming thing on this is the slight Mexican influences in the instrumentation, but thats not enough to save it from getting the 1 for me.

White ass music

I barely made it through this. 80s and 90s country is one of my least favorite genres. I hate the twangy (mostly) put on accents, the stupid lyrics, the bass lines that are basically just root notes, the steel guitar. And what the hell is with the vocals sounding like a pubescent boy whose voice is cracking all the time - like he randomly goes into a falsetto in the middle of every other word. Is he trying to sound like he's yodeling? What the hell?
A terrible album (for me) although I did appreciate some of the guitar parts. That's the dumb thing about country music - the vocals and most of the music is awful but you have some monster guitar players in there. 1.5/5 and will round up for some great guitar playing.

Affirms my prejudiced ideas that country has never been good, to the chagrin of the "country ain't good these days" types

Classic tapedeck country music. I’m sure a lot of these lyrics don’t age all that well, but I can’t be bothered to listen that closely. I don't need the specifics to know Dwight is vaguely sad and that's really all I need from my country music.
Dwight Yoakam was a borderline-unfortunate looking guy in 1988, and time hasn’t blessed him in that respect. Fortunately, he can sing and play enough guitar to support himself. I trust that he’s experienced with heartbreak and things not going his way, so these songs sound genuinely autobiographical to me.

Good country that somehow feels disingenuous in its heart? I know nothing of him.

Worse than Coldplay

Yeehaw let's wave that confederate flag, shoot dead some unfaithful women, and thank the good lord for leading us down the path of true salvation.

Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room by Dwight Yoakam is very much 80s country—and for me, that made it a tough listen. At least it only runs 37 minutes.

I didn’t enjoy this album at all. The music felt dated, and the lyrics didn’t connect with me in any meaningful way. This was easily a 1/5 listen.

Favourite track: None stood out.
Least favourite track: Honestly, every track.
Album artwork: Nothing special.

I am not a country fan, I am however a fan of Dwight Yoakam. 'What I don't know' is fantastic.

Its too bad country and western music these days is just 80's butt rock cosplaying as cowboys.

'Haunted and tortured by / The rumors about you / Listening in silence / To whispers of truth.' Some cheatin' chick has wound up on his bad side, but instead of merely allowing his jealousy get to him, tho he doesn't exactly monitor his outrage, Yoakam decides to sob some pretty effective poetry: 'I searched til' I found them, / then I cursed at the sight / Of their sleeping shadows / In the cold neon light.' But what makes this such a successful record is that, released in '88 and heard for the first time 2025, it doesn't collapse into a pointless throwback. Instead, the Bakersfield sound, inured by Buck Owens himself, is shown to have more stamina and relevance than I would've guessed. Even the Jesus-dyed conclusion has me cooperating.

Just not a country fan

Lol. Fuck off.

Please, no more country, I'm begging you! I know, I understand, I respect the big names on this genre: Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson... I mean, I can and will listen to those, they're amazing, almighty talented people!

This was just unbearable to me; call it cultural differences, whatever, I couldn't go over the entire album, skipped past the 3rd or 4th track! Who knows, can't remember a thing but the whining, a solid 0 from me (oh, wait, can't give 0!!!)

Rated 6/10

Can be rather samey, but it's not terrible country music.

Sometimes, really only sometimes, I like listening to country music. With this album, too, I thought I could give it a listen. Halfway through the album, the nagging wailing got on my nerves. This is exactly the soundtrack to boring, bourgeois street parties in oppressive heat where I wish I was somewhere else. Fortunately, I don't have to take part in anything like that. 2/5

You shut your mouth when you are talking to me. Classic.

The Good: We are wished a good night!
The Bad: The room is lonely…
The Ugly: Realizing Dwight’s real name is Akam…

Having lived in Texas in the ‘90s, I am more than familiar with Dwight’s work. Not from a fan standpoint, but more a “you live in a zoo, you’re going to know some animals…”

I’m not a big fan of C&W, and this here album, being so similar to ranchera music, as far as I’m concerned, is not my cup of tea.
However, I do prefer to listen to this than many other shit albums on this list… so I will shoot down the ally and hope I don’t hit Dwight off of his horse…
