Just what an amazing story of an album.

Rated 8/10

Intensely personal and hugely talented. Perhaps too personal, since she was told, having bared her soul in this one, "all you need to do for the follow-up is bare it all again." It did not go well.

For mine, a few too many mid tempo numbers cause it to sag a bit and it's probably too long, but it's quite an achievement.

Rated 8/10

Good album. Didn’t love every song, but there are some masterpieces in this.

3.5

Top tracks: Ex-Factor, Doo Wop (That Thing), Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You, Tell Him

Rated 8/10

Aye pretty solid

I liked this a lot more when I listened to it for the AM top 100, feel like the repeated listens since then has dragged it down a little bit but it’s still really really good

4.5. Very good album, but didn't have any real stand out songs for me.

This is as close to perfect album as there is. BUT - Record Company, if you're reading this: release a version without the 'skits'. You'll make a ton of money as we will all buy this again. The skits were fun to hear once, but really kill the vibe if you just want some music.

It still feels strange that Lauryn Hill’s solo studio discography basically begins and ends here, because 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘺𝘯 𝘏𝘪𝘭𝘭 makes it very obvious how much range she had. She can rap, sing, and move between hip hop and neo soul without making the album feel like it is constantly switching identities.

That balance is what I like most. The hip hop side gives the record bite, the neo soul side gives it warmth, and Hill’s voice ties everything together with a lot of personality. The album feels confident and polished, but never so polished that it loses its emotional weight.

It is a shame there was never a proper follow-up. One album is not much of a solo catalogue, but this is quite a way to make that one album count.

Like looking at a beautiful view from the top of a hill, this album moves you to think about the past, the future and what lies just Infront of you.

Rated 10/10

Yes, it's long. But there isn't an ounce of fat to trim on this album. the true definition of a masterpiece

Rated 8/10

Lauryn knows how to rap and sing! This album is like an homage to hip hop's conscious roots and Black spirituality. Could do away with the skits and long album length though.

Rated 10/10

A classic for a reason. Just great song after great song that all work to fit the theme of the album. This was my most listened album freshman year of college and listening again just brings me back to that time.

Day 3

Period. Miss Lauryn Hill!!! Fucking Period!!!!

Rated 4/10

Pleasant but understated.

Rated 8/10

100% an essential Hip-Hop / R&B Album. A lot of good songs I give this an 8/10.

Rated 10/10

i've loved a lot of tracks off this album since high school but haven't given the full thing a proper listen since then. there's some preachiness and a relatively conservative streak to some of the lyrics (the both sides-ism in doo-wop [that thing] in particular) that i've never cared for but the music, her voice, her lyrical craft is good enough i can look past it. some guys really are only about that thing though.

no bad songs here but some are more memorable than others and the runtime is pushed a bit far. doo-wop, when it hurts so bad, i used to love him, everything is everything, tell him, are long-time favorites. lost ones, ex-factor, to zion, superstar, forgive them father, can't take my eyes off of you (fantastic cover of a song i've always loved) stood out on this listen.

this album is so firmly a 4.5 to me but i can't do that here. i was going to give it a 4 but i've been listening to it all day and added it back to my library and i'm sitting here vibing to can't take my eyes off of you as i write this and i think i'm going to have to go 5. love.

It's great but I think it hasn't aged as well as some other music from its era. Again I wish I could go back to the 90s and tell every artist that you do not need to fill an entire CD.
