Makes me want to drink shit beer in a red flannel shirt on the porch of my farm house. Man I fucking love Eagles
Rated 4/10
This is like easy listening, yacht rock and country all wrapped into one. I don't like any of those things.
Hotel California is a bit of a bop, though.

That was pretty...I actually prefer the songs that aren't played on the radio all the time. New Kid in Town and Life in the Fast Lane I always change when they come on the radio. Hotel California (the song) will be a classic forever though.

I'm not a huge Eagles fan, but this album is really good. I had not listened to it for a number of years, but I really enjoyed it. It's definitely in the 4-5 star range.

Really nothing interesting aside from Hotel California and Life In The Fast Lane. I never understood why the Eagles got so big, they are pretty boring. They had a good song which became a huge hit and that's it for me.

By far less obnoxious or terrible than their debut, the Eagle's Hotel California has some decent melodies and a few ideas that almost work (omg, did I really write down these words?). I don't fully "love" a single track, but New Kid in Town has a mildly (and suspiciously) soothing effect on my psyche today (a grey, f*#king freezing cold day somewhere in Europe). For every New Kid in Town, however, there is a Life in the Fast Lane or Victim of Love, which trigger my fingers to hit the skip button immediately. I'm glad I finally sat through Hotel Californa, because now I can be reasonably certain I'll never have to do it again. I'm honestly surprised that this is considered such a gem, because for most of its runtime (which isn't even thaaaat long), it's actually… quite boring.

I don't care how overplayed Hotel California is. I can't deny that it's a really good song just because it's crazy popular. I wasn't around for their glory days, so I cannot get the idea of how oversaturated the radio was with their music. Man, I wasn't even conscious enough to get the Nickelback hate in its prime, so I really have no idea how that could've influenced my opinion on this album. I really enjoy this type of mellow rock, I think? Idk it's slower, softer, more relaxing. I like to have it as background music. I couldn't care less about what anyone thinks, call it boring, call it overrated. I just enjoy it, and I don't think that's a crime. Also worth to mention Life in the Fast Lane is the weakest on the album in my opinion. No idea why it's the second most streamed song.

The vitriolic hatred some have toward this album is really strange to me. The title track is simply one of the greatest songs ever written. Who doesn't know that song? Its influence and appeal being as widespread as it is contrasts its odd B minor key, its extended dual guitar solo, and the inscrutable, oft-discussed lyrics. It's on the "Hey Jude" tier for me- a pure pop song that will remain timeless, deserves so much praise, and carries with it an intangible quality of what Jack Black might call a "rocket sauce" song.
The other songs on Side 1 are all at the very least pleasant and, at their best, are great songs in their own right. "New Kid in Town" is a pretty Glenn Frey countrypolitan ballad reminiscent of Gram Parsons featuring some actually resonant lyrics. "Life in the Fast Lane" was another huge hit, very much Joe Walsh's big track here with its riff-driven melody.
Side 2, on the other hand, peaks early with the hard-edged "Victim of Love" and leans into a sappy AOR sound that unfortunately drags the album down a peg from being great to just good overall.

As expected.

For a band that seem to provoke strong feelings in a lot of people, I find The Eagles ... meh? I wouldn't ask a taxi driver to turn them off (a la The Big Lebowski) but I would't actively seek them out either. It just sort of slides by.

Okay, i was not expecting Hotel California to be this good. I only really knew this album for it's title track (and maybe Life in the Fast Lane too) and after hearing their self-titled album quite a while ago and finding it to be just alright. I thought that this album was just gonna follow in that album's footsteps but i was pleasantly surprised here. Outside of the two songs i mentioned that i initially knew this album for, this album was packed with quite a lot of good songs and i don't even think i found a single one to be bad or even meh, it managed to remain consistently great. I wouldn't say that its perfect but i still really liked this one.
Best Song: Life in the Fast Lane
Worst Song: Try and Love Again

Hotel California is the one song that stands out. Rest is mediocre...
Rated 6/10
The title song is clearly a masterpiece, but I wish I could say the same about the rest - and I haven't even finished listening to this, but don't have very high expectations, probably 3 stars just like I gave to their debut.

I was looking forward to Hotel California. That song was a big hit back in my day. I found the next song on the album disappointingly boring. After that, it was great again, only to fade away afterwards. Overall, there were too many downs compared to the few ups. I should remember the ups, but not the album as a whole. 3/5
Rated 6/10
As mediocre as this album is, it's beautifully recorded. The title track does a lot of the heavy lifting though - nothing else made much impact on me.

"THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL RADIO.
STAY TUNED FOR MORE ROCK AND ROLL!"
That's the radio announcement that rings in my head whenever I hear an Eagles song.
A few weeks ago I went to an Adam And The Ants gig. The support band were a 3 piece, two girls and a lad, all still teenagers, playing raw punk (F.Y.I. they were called Yee Loi). I have no doubt they formed because they just wanted to be in a band. And chose Punk because they loved it. Maybe their songs have a message. I couldn't tell over the shouting. They certainly looked like they loved what they were doing. And I loved watching them.
I imagine the Eagles band meetings were rather different. "How can we make piles of cash? I know, we'll write songs that appeal to housewives and get a lot of radio play. Then we'll sell a heap of records. kerching". In that they were hugely successful.
The Hotel California title track is, no doubting, a true classic. But having listened to the rest of the album I'm now doubting myself. Is it just because I've heard it so often? No. I do think they stumbed on a gem. But they bloody milked it well. In fact they sold a gazillion albums on the back of one track.
Other tracks I had heard before.. Life In The Fast Lane - a soft turd trying to harden up. New Kid In Town - boring nothing ballad. And the rest of the album is just middle of the road, souless and sterile. Radio pap to sell soap suds with.
For a "classic album" I was hugely disappointed.

'He said, "we haven't had / That spirit here since 1969."' I want to hate the title-track, and in many ways I do, but it has a few things going for it, the guitar solo notwithstanding (I know it's celebrated, but it's soft rock trying hard to be hard). At the very least, it's a peculiar if pretentious success, a song that's enjoyably inexplicable. I want to hate the rest of the tracks, and in many ways I do, but they're not the worst I've heard, despite the milage of faux soul the band covers. The record is essentially a deficient version of Clapton's inconsistent solo work, w/ the subtle reggae nods and all. It does boast a particularly bad song, the arid and brainless 'Victim of Love': 'A room full of noise and dangerous boys / Still makes you thirsty and hot.'
