Experimental, Avant-Garde Jazz... So you know they're just making this shit up

Rated 6/10

This album is nice to have on as background music, the hats aren't as overpowering as normal jazz seems to have and it contains piano which I am a huge fan of.

This type and era of jazz is right in the sweet spot for me. I hadn't heard this before, but I really enjoyed it. They just don't make em like this anymore, sadly...

An all-time jazz classic for a reason.

I’m familiar and a big fan of Mingus Ah Um, which should be on this list! But first time listening to this album, this is different a bit more experimental Jazz, but I still enjoyed it, personally I prefer bebop jazz, to the experimental side of it. But this one had a nice mix of the two, added to my rotation.

This is the worst kind of jazz for me. No beginning, no middle and seemingly no end. It just meanders on like they are warming up their instruments before the show begins. But the show never did begin.

This album makes that Bill Evans album look like a fucking preschool recital, holy shit. What an instant 5.

The layering on every instrumental is perfectly done, the mixing is fabulous, and the avant garde composition of the piano, the brass, and the percussion — good lord, the percussion — is a masterclass in jazz. For 1963, this is experimental as hell, but it’s aged beautifully well. The quickest 40 minutes of an album experience I think I’ve had so far, but in a really pleasing way that had me encapsulated the entire time. I’m really deeply impressed by how much this sort of touched me, and I’m glad I listened to it. Fantastic album, easy 5.

A true masterpiece. Top-notch composition and performances.

Musically sound. Not my style but would be his background music

I do love brass...

Sometimes I read the global reviews and just shake my head. This is one of those times.

This album gets dubbed “avant garde” but in my opinion it’s highly accessible. Written as a ballet piece, the movements make sense throughout the tracks. There’s a nice blend of bop, orchestral and flamenco music.

Not sure why I’ve never listened through a Mingus record before but this is worth every minute.

Stökjazz. Rätt jobbigt.

Clearly these are some talented musicians, but I just can't into the music they actually play.

Rated 4/10

It was very jazz.

Still hate jazz

I can see why people are so divided over this one, it's not exactly something you can just throw on any time. You have to be in the right mood for it. Some people would just say it's noise and I think that might be fair but if you listen to what's happening it's great noise. Musicianship is superb as always with Mingus. It may not be my favorite jazz record of all time but it's still a great listen and typical for this style so I feel like it would be a good record to start with for someone trying to get an expanded view of jazz.

Thought I would enjoy this. I did not.

Rated 6/10

Jazz. Niiiiiiiicccccccccccccceeeee.

Rated 6/10

Abstract, experimental, chaotic. One minute there will be a Spanish guitar solo and the next a ripping saxophone solo followed by mellow moments.
