It was really fun but it's not going to go down as an all timer or anything

I'll take Songs I Cannot Sing Along To for 809, Alex

Not too bad, however track 7 is very long and I don't like track 2.

It was a decent listen.

A few stellar singles, and some really odd songs too. I’d go 3.5 if I could.

The Good: Clear instructions!
The Bad: We weren’t sure if we needed to “still”, “and deliver”, or “strong!”…
The Ugly: I’ve been standing for days now…
Turns out that a year ago, almost to the day, Sly passed away… so I guess I should take this album presentation as a way of remembering the man, and his family.
Let me start off by stating that, if you are not a die-hard funk fan, well, then this album is going to get a little tedious after a while—especially taking into consideration that most of the songs sound like a live jam… nothing wrong with a live jam, just not when it’s not your jam.
I am not a massive funk fan, but I can appreciate it for what it is: a sign that you are going to have fun.
And it was fun to listen to the album… just not certain if I needed to listen to the Deluxe Edition.
4* due to Everyday People!

My 501st album, and I can't believe it's taken me this long to get some Sly & The Family Stone. (*Cough, I didn't automatically get a Sly Stone album when he died last year, like we did for Ozzy Osbourne and Brian Wilson, cough.*) What an influential, funky and fun album.

The first thing that came to mind with this album was how it sounded like the theme songs to a late 60s, early 70s TV show. Then that second song came and I was like, oh this is getting serious.
Stand! manages to balance funk's joyous spirit with the sociopolitical messages of the later half of the decade. I think it's one of those perfect albums that capture the fallout of the flower power movement and the resulting aftermath that leads into the next decade (3.5-4).

Accomplished musicianship and nice grooves but I found it quite uninteresting at best and annoying at worst

What a great album this one is! Initially I thought I would give it 4 stars, but I gave 4.5/5.0 on RYM and really thinking this deserves 5 here. What a great band and what a great sound, we have a few big hits with "Stand!", "Everyday People" and "I want to take you higher", but also some albums tracks shine with "Sing a simple song" and album closer "You can make it if you try". And a surprising discovery with 13+ minute instrumental funk masterpiece of "Sex Machine".

Better than Coldplay

Nothing stuck out to me with this album. It was just good.

Not really my jam

It's not often that my reaction to seeing what my album is first thing in the morning is "Yes! Let's listen to this RIGHT NOW!", but here we are, listening to Sly and the Family Stone and turning it up just a little too loud for early Monday morning.
Last year when Sly Stone died, I heard a lot of these songs on the radio again. They all felt so motivating and forceful that while I remember most of them from when they first came out when I was a kid, they're making a huge impression on me now because of how contemporary they feel.
And the music is wonderful too, of course. So many great singles on this record, like "Stand," "I Want to Take You Higher," and "Everyday People." And on top of all that, there's an absolutely brutal 13-minute funk instrumental.
Just a fantastic record. 5 stars.
