Like a lot of people on this site, I got this album the day after her death. I'm not from the US, there will not be national days of mourning, but I love that a lot of people got Dolly today, just like a lot of people got Ozzy when he passed.

I think she's helped a bit by the old timey recording techniques, and I think she does silly much better than genuine, but this is a great album.

The last track of this album is “A Better Place to Live”, and darn if it doesn’t sum up Dolly Parton’s way of being an example to us all. RIP Dolly, you did well here.

The good side of country

She died yesterday, and the next album generated is one of hers. R.I.P. Dolly Parton. We lost another legend with you. ✊💔

Okay, turns out this was probably on purpose; well, I'm not surprised, tho it still can break someone's heart.

Anyway, after listening through this album while riding a virtual steam locomotive between Warwick and Wallangarra in Australia, I must say I really wanted to like it. I did like most of it, but unfortunately the best I can give is a 3.5/5

Bra melodier, country, kort skiva. Dolly dog igår 20260825. 3,5 av 5.

I can't say anything bad about dolly parton ✌️

First listen. RIP Dolly. (Maybe not a coincidence that this came up the day after she died.) What a wonderful voice.

Dolly Parton died yesterday afternoon, and I can't help but think that this is a spectacular coincidence. Anyway, her death is a profound tragedy, and I suppose I must grieve somehow, and this album is great.

I’d previously heard Jolene and parts of The Grass Is Blue, and I think anyone who’s so much as dipped their feet in the genre of country has heard this album’s excellent title track, but there’s other great songs too. A personal favorite is the deeply moving “If I Lose My Mind,” just one of many examples of Parton’s incredible depictions of marital strife, something she would become known for. I also like this album’s rendition of “Early Morning Breeze,” which was also a notable cut off of Jolene. I’m also very partial to the romantic, sweet “The Way I See You,” which is an incredibly pretty little love song.

Now, obviously this album is a bit short, but I can’t help but think of it in a similar way to how I think of Jolene, for its beautiful songs of nature and its sadder songs of relationships. I really really love this album, and I deeply grieve the loss of this legend. RIP Dolly.

DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: YES
REASON: landmark album in one of the best careers in music history. Rest in Power.

RIP to a true queen. Not only was she a great person but her music is super devine as well.

Rated 6/10

Enjoyed this more than Trio and I'm not a heartless monster, so it's getting a 3. Maybe because this was from the 70s whereas Trio was from the 80s it just appealed to me more? It's something about the instruments just sounding better...

For a few minutes i deadass thought it was a coincidence i receive this album the day after Dolly’s passing but apparently it’s the same for everyone. I gotta say listening to her songs now feels much more depressing. She had a lovely voice and timeless hits, but most of all she was a good soul and for that reason i believe her death is truly a big loss for the world. Now i can’t give this album more than a 3 since i really dislike country music, but Dolly’s stuff is probably the best of the genre.

Rated 8/10

In the day we learn of Dolly Parton's passing, I was tasked with rating her masterpiece in one of those weird coincidences. Saying that this is the best country album of all time would sell short how personal and intimate Dolly sounds in the album, which has no major downsides and is a great listen throughout. Rest easy, Dolly!

Wszystko co mówilam o country nie dotyczy tej płyty i tej Pani. Bardzo, bardzo wielka szkoda, że się zebrała z tego świata. A płyta cudna, taka radosna.

Rated 6/10

good enough but a bit too country

Rated 10/10

Great songwriting and some of the most beautiful singing ever put to record. RIP legend.

Rated 10/10

Rip to a legend. My first full album from Dolly Parton but this was fantastic. Great vocals, great lyrics, great sound. Short and sweet too

Rated 8/10

Dolly may be gone, but her angelic voice will live on forever. Favorite track: The Mystery of the Mystery

Rated 4/10

I can see how this is a fair example of a genre that I've got absolutely no time for at all. Lyrically it holds little back in laying her class / poverty struggles bare, acting almost like a confessional document. In that sense it's easy to connect with her songwriting. I just can't do her vocals, and found the music itself incredibly simple and unengaging.

Sad to hear of her passing though. She seemed like a genuinely decent human being who used her status for good.

Tennessean, actress, Grand Ole Opry member, Country Music Hall of Fame member, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, humanitarian, theme park owner, LGBTQ+ icon, country music icon, and hair model for some slightly questionable but undeniably iconic hairstyles: Dolly Parton was quite a lot of things.

By the time 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴 arrived, she had already released several solo records and a string of albums with Porter Wagoner, but this feels like the point where Dolly truly stepped into the spotlight on her own terms. The title track shows exactly why she became such a remarkable songwriter: simple language, vivid storytelling, warmth, humour, and emotion without ever feeling overdone.

And she was still only getting started. 𝘑𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘦 would become an even bigger landmark a few years later, but 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴 already sounds like the arrival of the Dolly Parton the world would come to know.

Dolly, we will always love you.
