Pleasant, some solid songs here and decent folk-country, but not really exciting.
Rated 8/10
I'm not generally a fan of the early 70s country twang, but I genuinely enjoyed this album from start to finish. "The Way I See You" was the standout for me. Great melody, beautiful vocals, excellent lyrics, and perfectly paced. "My Blue Tears" was another favorite, sounding like something Linda Ronstadt could have recorded 15 years later. I appreciated the beauty and message of "Coat of Many Colors," even if story songs aren't usually my thing. "Traveling Man" was catchy, but a little too theatrical, like a song from a perfectly adequate community theater production.
Not everything was my style, but unlike some albums on this list, I wasn't checking how many songs were left and wondering what I'd done to deserve this. I actually enjoyed the whole thing. Almost gave it 3 stars, but a second listen to "The Way I See You" pushed it to 4/5.

Country lovers will enjoy this

Sweet Dolly, probably even better than the album I got on the day of your passing.
Coat Of Many Colors is such a sweet story that tells you a lot about the woman, growing up with nothing, but armed with a sense of purpose and savvy that would serve her well, along with that amazing voice.
The remainder of the songs are not anything too fancy, but they get the job done with aplomb. Hard to find anything too negative to say about this, it passed the time very nicely.

Such a beautiful soul gone too soon. Albums really great too

Rest in Peace Queen! Some solid sweet stuff in this album despite country not really being big thing for me, but this sounds so sincere and honest that you can't help but enjoy this and smile, at least 3, perhaps 4 stars. P.S. Nah, after finishing this, it's definitely no doubt 4 stars!

The more Dolly Parton I listen to, the more that every new song sounds like every other song I've already listened to of hers. I appreciate the simplicity of their composition; fiddle, steel guitar, bass, and vocals. Though, the simplicity of the songs leads to their homogenous sound. Dolly's strength lies in her musical storytelling, and the first two tracks, Coat of Many Colors and Traveling Man stand out for that aspect. Truly a great album for those who know what they like and want to keep listening to it. Personally, I'm not a huge country guy, so songs like these without any unique captivating melodies or choruses are a bit of a drag to get through, although a possible exception could be found in the bassline of "Early Morning Breeze." A very short album, at 27mins, it didn't overstay its welcome. I preferred Trio. RIP Dolly.

Lovely songs from a lovely lady. My Dad (born in South Wales, lived in SE England his entire life) loved this era of country, and so I guess I do too. Yes, it's kinda twee, but the vocals are absolutely perfect and the songwriting spot on.
Jolene & Islands will forever be the 5-star standout Dolly tracks for me but I could happily listen to this again anytime.

Overall it does what it says on the tin . Sad stories with a country twang and steel guitar
Well this is hard , not least because Dolly passed in the last week . “Coat of Many Colour” is one of 3 songs that is guaranteed to get me to well up (along with “Mean” by Taylor Swift and “The leaving of Liverpool l” by the Dubliners)
Music like all good art should cause an emotional reaction and this album does
As an Englishman that grew up with Ernie the fastest milkman in the west as they only real country touchstone it’s hard not to class honky tonk as comedy- especially if they are humorous like traveling man.

The five is more for the artist than the album. There are plenty of tracks I love here but the effect of Dolly on me and my family and our sense of a good life is inestimable. Way too many feelings to process with her passing.
Rated 8/10
Musically, country can be quite boring, but this album isn't, thanks to stellar songwriting, and a great voice.

Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors has such a warm, nostalgic feeling that it feels less like simply listening to an album and more like stepping into a collection of memories. I really loved how heartfelt and comforting the songs felt, with stories about family, childhood, love, hardship, and finding beauty in simple things.
This was actually my first time listening to a full Dolly Parton album, and I honestly regret discovering her music so late. There’s something incredibly genuine about her voice and storytelling that makes even the simplest songs feel deeply personal. The album has a wonderful balance of tenderness, humor, sadness, and hope, and you can really feel the importance of her Appalachian roots and upbringing throughout it.
The title track, “Coat of Many Colors,” especially stood out to me. Its story is simple but incredibly moving, turning something born out of poverty into a symbol of love, pride, and family. That ability to find warmth and meaning in ordinary experiences is probably what I appreciated most about the album.
I’m really glad I finally gave Dolly Parton a chance. Coat of Many Colors feels timeless, sincere, and deeply human—and now I’m definitely curious to explore more of her music.

First Dolly album I've heard, she was a great storyteller, and everything i know suggests an amazing person RIP

Country music is super underrepresented on this list, and it doesn’t get much better than Dolly.

They have to be doing this purposely. Ozzy dies and the day after I get a Sabbath album. Dolly dies and I get one of her albums. This algorithm is cruel.
Anyway. This is a great, short and sweet country album that manages to be quite varied across its brief length. What a talent, RIP Dolly x

Short and sweet…. Just like Dolly ❤️

What are the odds, the day after the news that Dolly had passed away, this comes up as the album for today….
So, turns out this is as old as me, and to my shame I’ve never listened to this before. Country has never been my thing….
And to my very pleasant surprise this is very, very good. Storytelling songs and the production isn’t too over the top.
Solid 3 from me. That’s a massive compliment given my tastes.
Rest in peace Dolly.

Like a lot of people on this site, I got this album the day after her death. I'm not from the US, there will not be national days of mourning, but I love that a lot of people got Dolly today, just like a lot of people got Ozzy when he passed.
I think she's helped a bit by the old timey recording techniques, and I think she does silly much better than genuine, but this is a great album.
