This was good. There's even a few songs I could see my adding to playlists. But this is not 1001 material (sorry Carly, I suspect you might love this)

HarvestNeil Young

Rated 6/10

I went through this period in my early 20s where everyone I knew was into Neil Young so I bought this album. I get it, it's really good, but it never clicked for me the way it clicked for other people.

This record was not made for me. The vocals and the way they're mixed are grating. I guess musically it's fine enough but honestly... it's like it's doing something and nothing at the same time.

I'm back talking about dirtbags again today. When this came out, I was in high school and only the real dirtbags were listening to this. I heard this album so much then and built up this negative association. I liked Roots Bloody Roots but beyond that, the album had become inaccessible to me. A few weeks ago, I spun this record and realized it only has a dirtbag veneer.

Rated 10/10

I saw P. Gabes perform in 2024 and it was so beautiful it moved me to tears. It was a concert for the history books.

When I started junior high, there was this girl in my class, Dawn, who liked this album. It had only come out a few months before and she likely came to it through her older sisters. I just couldn't relate to the music, it was so far removed from where I was and it felt like it had a level of maturity I just relate to.

I thought of Dawn as a 'tough' girl because she was already smoking at 12 years old, this being the late 1900s and all. I kinda thought her listening to this album made her a dirtbag, kinda the way the model on the cover of this looks absolutely feral. Anyway, 30+ years on, this album hits in such a different way and I wish I had been less judgmental of Dawn. Truly a wasted opportunity to bond over Courtney Love at 12 years old.

I revisited this once I wasn't so tired and was in a better mood. It's pretty much what I thought it would be. It's good and I can hear it pulling from Joni. I would never complain if someone else threw this one but I can't see me ever spinning it myself.

I'm not in a super open minded place today listening to this. I think there's something going on here that's good but my tired ears just can't hear it.

The vocals are just atrocious. I also get that this is supposed to be weird and it's proto-weird? I don't know, I feel like even weird needs to follow at least some conventions to make it good. Hence why I feel this is proto-weird. Anyway, I kinda hate it. It feels like making fun of hippies is punching down.

Van HalenVan Halen

Rated 10/10

I remember one time, nearly 20 years ago, I listened to the entire Van Halen discography in chronological order. Good times.

This album is such a classic for me. I thought it was edgy AF when I was a teen. We both know what song I'm talking about. This album hits so much different now that I'm older. It's a bop
