It's interesting because most of the songs on this album are over 4 minutes, many pushing towards 5 minutes and even one that's 9 minutes. That's pretty exception given it was released in 1968. To modern ears, it's just rock and roll but I can see why this would be included on the list. The artwork is also kinda cool but the back story of the graphic artist only agreeing to do it if he got to pinch Janis's tit is kinda wild.

The artwork kinda makes me sick.

Also, only Hair Pie: Bake 1 is on Spotify and it's discordantly unfun. I will not be seeking out the rest of this album.

I get it's a commentary on the mainstream, highly polished pop and rock music norms of the 1960s. I also get that it deconstructs the traditional conventions of blues, rock, and pop. I know that it has an anti-commercial statement.

I don't care that John Peel and Lester Bangs think that this album is incredible. I don't and that's all that counts when it really comes down to it.

A name I know but not music that I'm familiar with. This wasn't on Spotify but I found it on YouTube. I'm glad I did, I enjoyed this. I liked the first half of this album is a bit strong than the second half. Still enjoyed it throughout, though

The first track on this album, Flying High, is 2m41s. I made it to about 1m45s and was already thinking about skipping it. I endured only to arrive at the second track, Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine. And I noticed immediately that this song was not as good as the first song which I didn't think was all that good to begin with. At 1m37s into it, which is 4m24s, I knew I couldn't endure it. So I pressed skip and arrived at track 3, Death Sound (4m26s). Very bluesy start, which I don't hate but if this is as good as it gets, this 44m album is too long a haul for me.

Without actually knowing it, I knew this was Talking Heads adjacent.

The first song was beyond cringe. I was surprised I knew the second song, Genuis of Love. It's been sampled to death. It's a bit of a jam, though.

The rest of the songs all feel a bit similar. Everything feels flat, like it was all recorded with the exact same levels and no dynamics. And why are so many of the songs soooo looong?!

As for the album cover artwork, it's just straight up bad.

Honestly, this is a generous 2.

I get why this is such a classic and so well loved. The hits are fantastic and apparently, John Legend, who was then an unknown, played many of the piano pieces on this album. My complaint is that some of these songs are kinda meh and it felt a little samey at times.
