NevermindNirvana

Rated 10/10

Let's start with an honest appraisal: Is this musically one of the best albums of all time? Honestly, no. However this is the perfect example of Lightning in a bottle.

At this point in time there was a real shift of culture - music, fashion, and attitudes were dragged in a singular direction in a way that I have not experienced in my lifetime. Whether that shift was due to this album, or the album was riding the crest of that shift is impossible to know as the two are intertwined so deeply. This album is such a perfect embodiment of that specific time and mood that I'm unsure if anyone that wasn't a part of it can really understand the impact this had on music fans across the world.

Twelve tracks with zero skips, with an incredible authenticity to them that even Nirvana couldn't replicate (Unplugged album aside but for different reasons). It took that Seattle grunge sound worldwide and gave a fresh breath of air to guitar music. The raw and unpolished sound may not be to everyone's tastes but if you were to recommend a batch of albums to an alien visitor to Earth to introduce them to music, this would undoubtedly be near the top of the list.

Favourite track: Lounge Act

The dreaded three stars - I'm not sure I liked it, but I wholly appreciate the attempt to create something new and unique

Its a very up and down album. There are tracks that just burst with energy and grab you and others that just seem to meander along. Dizzee improved his sound over the years and this was such an early album both in terms of his style and UK rap in general.

Not heard this album before, although I have heard a couple of the songs including 'Alright' which is still a very popular song thirty years later.

The first few notes and I thought this could potentially be a one star album but it actually grew on me a little

Better than the previous KoL albums I have heard, I think the earlier bluesier stuff is a bit more listenable. Still I couldn't image anyone being particularly excited about this

Does anyone outside of the US rate country? Folk music across is very cultural in the same way I wouldn't expect someone from Kentucky to understand the Wurzels

I understand why metal fans love Slayer. They are completely uncompromising in their approach compared to the other big metal bands. I think if you aren't a purest metal fan though this will be a challenging listen.
