This album will feature in my new book: “Albums your Dad insists are among the best of all time but are actually mediocre at best”

File this as another album that I’d for some reason decided wasn’t for me. But absolutely is. Obviously heard a fair few of these songs but never the full album.

Now we’re talking. This is what I want from this list. Never heard of it, weird, and right up my street.

I came back to this one and not sure how I arrived at this rating. not awful but certainly not good enough to listen again.

Only 20 years later I now get the reference.

Completely over the top. But I got into it.

About 30 mins into this I was thinking this was a classic 3 star. I was enjoying it fine. Even if like many albums on this list it certainly wouldn’t qualify as a “must listen” but then realised I was only half way through the album.

No reason for this to be an hour long. No reason for this to be on the list, but i like to reserve the 1 stars for the real irredeemable stuff.

What the hell is this?

In its retrospective review, AllMusic wrote "American Gothic remains one of those great albums that never found its audience. It waits to be rediscovered."

It’ll have to keep looking.

Wow, still an incredible songwriting talent. A nearly 50 years between his first album on this list and his last and both are incredible. Not sure how much I’m going to listen to this one again given how heavy it is. But I can’t give it less than four stars.

Great that this widened the audience for hip hop. But this is not a great album. Sounds like some sketchy stuff going on around royalties too.

Great. a bit long, and I think I prefer their early stuff. But still enjoy this a lot. Good motorcycle album too

It’s still a very impressive album. But maybe not quite as good as I remember it. With the addition of Kanye’s activities over the last few years I think this looses its position on best albums of all time list.

I don’t know how to review this. It wasn’t bad? I liked bits of it. But I think this process has broken me because I don’t think I would have said that if this was the first album i listened to. 3 stars while I remain confused.

Glad to have listened to this album. Although I wish the book picked one of the hundreds of albums from the artist available on Apple Music.

It wasn't some life changing revelation or gateway to a whole new genre. But I enjoyed my time with it, and feel like I know a bit more about one artist in this genre now.
