Why are they called Scissor Sisters?

Rated 6/10

This is a great pop record with a unique, drag show inspired sound which still sounds fresh today. It deservedly dominated the radio waves for a decade with its stand out singles.

Rated 4/10

They seem to be good at creating melodies with the vocals but the instrumentation feels flat and at times non existent. Fun music but inconsequential, easily forgettable and too long for what it offers.

Rated 5/10

Top : Take Your Mama
Flop : Better Luck

this is some good stuff what the hell

For the longest time I thought these guys were a bunch of women. In my defence, if you saw a band called something like 'The Blowjob Brothers' you'd expect it to be full of men, no?

Rated 6/10

Not really my thing, but wasn't too bad

Rated 6/10

I'll just say it, I hate the Pink Floyd cover on here; the idea has potential but it sounds like their heart is not in it at all. It's weird, too, because the rest of the album shows that they can make some pretty danceable and funky disco songs. Solid listen for the most part!

Standouts: Take Your Mama • Lovers In The Backseat • Return to Oz

Another artist that my cousin Elaine liked (along with Franz Ferdinand and MIKA). I didn't really like them, although maybe that's just because I was sick of hearing from my mom about how cool they were because my cousin said so!!! (The Magnetic Fields are also cool!!!)

Anyway, I did go on to use the song 'Laura' on mix CDs for my friend Laura (and now that we've had a few albums with "shamone"s on them I know it's not an SS original!).

As a cover, I hate this version of 'Comfortably Numb', but if I assume it is just a totally different song, then it is fine. Sounds a bit like 'Relax'.

Overall I guess this genre is up my alley, and I enjoyed listening to the album. Did I 4-enjoy it? I think I 3.5 enjoyed it, and my lingering resentment will lead me to round it down. The guy singer is on on Broadway now though; good for him.

Highlight: 'Music Is the Victim'

Spodziewałam się dobrej imprezy, a nie spodziewałam się dobrej muzyki i świetnej imprezy! Co za płyta, aż jestem w szoku. Zapisuję, zostań ze mną na dłużej 🥳

This one starts brilliantly with Laura and Take Your Mama. Two absolutely cracking tracks.

Then there’s the cover of Comfortably Numb. I didn’t like it when it originally came out and I’m still not that fussed on it. I will give them respect though for doing something completely different with the song. It’s just not for me.

After that nothing really did much for me until Filthy/Gorgeous which is probably the strongest of the singles for me.

Overall it’s a good album, one or two more standout tracks and I’d probably give it a 4 star. I do massively prefer the follow up album Ta-Dah though.

Top Track - It Can’t Come Quickly Enough. Never really paid attention to it when the album originally came out but enjoyed it today.

I don't like the high voices. Quite annoying after just 3 songs

Rated 4/10

I’m not well versed in superhero movies but a common trope seems to be that the villain is a very intelligent or talented misfit that somehow went wrong and converted to the darkside.
I feel like that is an appropriate backstory for this band. They have talent but they use their powers for evil. Their good chops make terrible music. I’m struck by their flexibility. Give them any genre and they can deliver a horrible song. 80s ballad? ✅ 00s new wave pop? ✅ Unforgivable cover of a classic rock song? ✅✅✅ I’m giving 1 bonus point for the genius lyric “you can’t see tits on the radio”. - oooph.

I recognize a few of the tracks on this by name, though I was surprised to see "Comfortably Numb" on here. What I know of this artist I don't particularly enjoy, so I'm not holding out much hope. Otherwise, I've never listened to this album start-to-finish.

I wasn't really feeling this and was prepared to give it a 2 or 3. But the "Comfortably Numb" cover makes this a 1. This is bad and I don't have to act like it's okay.

Rated 6/10

What in the Stayin' Alive, Bee Gee's-ass cover of Comfortably Numb is this?
The rest of the album is pretty solid honestly (Mary, Lovers in the Back Seat), but at the risk of coming off as an old man defending the honor of a bunch of old rich assholes (read: Roger Waters), that cover is just offensively bad. Like, a complete misinterpretation of the original song. Making a dance-y, disco cover of a song that's all about being so drugged out of your mind that you can't move is just a weird ass take. And I don't even care much for Wall-era Pink Floyd. But what do I know, Waters apparently liked the cover, so fuck me I guess, lol.

But anyways yeah, the album isn't half bad. Kinda in line with other weird throwback bands on the list from the 90's and 2000's like The Cardigans and Darkness (Cardigans being the clear winner of the three IMO). Would I put it on the list? Absolutely not, but definitely not an album that isn't worth a listen. But not really my vibe either.

Rated 8/10

Simply -fabulous-. A great, joyous album that's made my day just a tad brighter.

Rated 8/10

Wow... I had never heard of this before today and was pretty skeptical based on the description. Turns out a lot of this really rocks! Love the late '70s disco throwback vibes. Lots of funk going on. It's not all great, but most importantly it's fun, which is pretty refreshing. Will be listening to this again.

Ah this is so fun. You forget how many great songs this lot have. Very nostalgic for any UK 00s kid.
