DirtAlice in Chains

Rated 10/10

When I was a kid, I didn’t get AIC at first. Then one night freshman year of high school I got drunk drinking 40s in Riverside Park. My parents picked me up and as I lay out wasted in the backseat, “Down in a Hole” came on the radio and I finally understood. I was worried AIC wasn’t gonna make it on this list which would have been a travesty. Every track on this one is a legendary banger.

“Gotta Get Up” was cool as the Russian Doll theme. It’s clear that he’s a talented singer and instrumentalist, but his style doesn’t really jive with me.

This actually goes kinda hard sometimes. That Volk bass playing/sound is really something else. Some of the guitar and keyboard playing is cool too. Kind of a witchy twist on the psychedelic rock sound of the time. The songs are of inconsistent quality though and I dislike generally creepy patronizing vocal tone though.

Was prepared not to like this one from the description but I recognized the first song as one we used to sing in Summer camp when I was a kid so that changed my sentiments a bit from the outset. From there on I was less than enthralled, but didn’t hate it. I like Parsons’ voice. And I kinda like that they pissed off both the country purists and the teeny boppers.
