Honestly exactly just as I expected - this is too basic, too inoffensive and simpletonish music for the big masses. Something you can easily consume and be happy. Of course I knew the clocks and I actualyl liked one other song so far but it doesn't begin even close to saving this, probably strong 2 stars here.

Not as good as their debut, but a thousand times better than their newer stuff. I fear Coldplay will never be as good as in their early albums... and those albums, like this one, are just peak.

Oh man, I loved Coldplay as a teenager. It's hasn't really held up as well, but it isn't terrible.

Read this this morning and went UGH BLOODY COLDPLAY. My opinion on Coldplay hasn't changed since that, and yet the album is fine. There's some nice piano on it, Chris Martin sometimes sounds ok and is sometimes annoying. The Daylight song was rather irritating

Great, Coldplay. A notoriously boring yet popular band. Of course, as with most popular music, the music is utterly mediocre. It sounds like Bends-era Radiohead without the ability to carry melancholy as well. In other words, it's imitation Radiohead that lacks the craft and songs of the real thing. I understand why it's here, but it's not good.
This album is ranked #4 of 16 albums for 2002. Other 2002 albums rated by me:
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots(2/16)-5
Sea Change(6/16)-2
Highly Evolved(11/16)-2
The Coral(12/16)-1
A Little Deeper(15/16)-2
Justified(16/16)-2

Remember the good old days when not all Coldplay songs sounded the same? This album and X&Y were so fucking good. So many saves!

Copy-pasted (with minor edits for clarity) from my review for "Parachutes":
I'm quite familiar with this album. When Coldplay first came out, I admit I didn't like it. I found I could enjoy "Trouble" but still had a tough time getting their overall thing. When their second album came out, I enjoyed that quite a bit more. I checked that out, and found it to be solid, and upon revisiting "Parachutes," I was able to see it in a different light and came to enjoy it on a similar level. But then they released their third album. It's got one or two good songs, but otherwise blah. And the "blah" has only intensified since then. So, it has become disheartening to listen to the first two Coldplay albums, knowing what has happened since then. These first two albums are absolutely worth being on this list and a clear distinction should be made between them and the albums thereafter.

Lugn och melankolisk skiva. Gillar Clocks och In My Place bäst.
Rated 8/10
This is a very good album. It contains four great songs in a row: "In My Place", "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face', "The Scientist" (my favourite track in the album), and "Clocks".
Although they have a pretty distinctive sound, they manage to include some variety and don't sound repetitive. For instance, I also enjoyed "Warning Sign" or "The Whisper".
Overall, this is in the 4,5 star range for me.

In a alternative or more righteous world, Jimi Goodwin and Doves would be the superstars and coldplay would have been the hipster pick. But alas here we are.
That all being said, this album came out in my PURE teen hormonal rage and wheewwww brings back memories. I still remember buying the CD and listening to it cover to cover.
It’s a masterclass in how to write a hook even if all you can play is basic bar chords.
Rated 8/10
This album reminds me of my dad and that makes me happy :)
Rated 4/10
mediocre in a really frustrating way where a lot of these songs have the potential to be good but don't quite make it there. undercooked and sauceless. i have always had a soft spot for clocks though. maybe just listen to clocks.
highlights: clocks

Fun... is a 3.5 possible?
Rated 2/10
I'm sorry but hell no, the whole time I was hoping this would just end & also they had no business making basically every song 5 minutes.
Rated 4/10
I gave it a chance (first four songs) and it confirmed my belief that Coldplay are quite dull. It's not badly written or recorded but the whole product seems like a collection of advert songs. Or New Year's Eve montages. It feels like music listening on super easy mode. Which is fine because most people don't want challenging music - they want to pick one out 5 CD options in Tesco and put the case in their glovebox next to The Best Driving Anthems and go back to thinking about their mortgage or their new lawnmower.
