This is an album I haven’t heard before. I really enjoyed all the effects and spaciness. I wasn’t sold at the beginning but from Memory Boy to the end they really locked in. Cool album cover too.

This whole album seemed like relatively paint by numbers jazz to me. I liked the song The Mountain. I did not notice that the linked version on Spotify is missing the title track so I listened to that on YouTube and I am so glad I did. What a fantastic song. The way the piano dances, the flute solo, the trombone parts with the shifting dynamics are just fantastic.

Hearing samples by his peers like the Beastie Boys or Public Enemy is so funny to me. It’s like if you heard Drake sample A$AP Rocky nowadays. I don’t think this album is quite as good as his first, but there is still lots to love here. Too many skits though. Favorites were The Predator, It Was A Good Day, Don’t Trust ‘Em, and Check Yo Self.

It’s a classic for a reason. Some of Neil’s best and clearest vocal performances with the typically great songwriting. Not my favorite by him but how can you choose?

I was not sold straight off the jump but this grew on me as it continued. This was a pleasant listen and Emmylou Harris’ vocals are a nice inclusion. Good song variety. Favorite songs were I Can’t Dance, $1000 Wedding, and Love Hurts.

Glad I heard this, but not something I will be revisiting. Not every song here needed to be six minutes long. I’m sure if I spoke the language I might get more out of this, but as it is I think this can be repetitive. I think the song Kettodee was solid and had a nice instrumental.

Another good album by Tom Waits. Great instrumentals and solid vocal performances. Some of these songs were like taking Bruce Springsteen and rolling him in dirt. His ability to create imagery is so impressive. Favorites were Heartattack And Vine, Downtown, Jersey Girl, and On The Nickel.

The songwriting here is really great as expected, but did we really need the Jaw Harp in every song? Overall I think this is weaker than his first album. Favorites were Bird On The Wire, A Bunch Of Lonesome Heroes, The Partisan, and The Butcher.

Beats are great as expected from J Dilla and Q-Tip himself. His flows are great and all the R&B features make the hooks really great. Favorites were Won’t Trade, Gettin Up, WeFight/WeLove, Move, and Life Is Better.

There are good ideas here, but I don’t think the band commits hard enough to selling them. Not a big fan of the vocalist either. I liked the song Out-Side.

This is the music that was used in YouTube compilations of rollercoaster POVs. I like that Climbatize samples Won’t Get Fooled Again. I like Big Beat. Favorites were Smack My Bitch Up, Breathe, Funky Shit, Firestarter, and Climbatize.

Now did I expect the band who gave us Lovefool to give us a song that interpolates Sabbath and an entire Iron Man cover on the same album? No I did not, but it was a pleasant surprise. I really liked this album. Her voice is great and the compositions were interesting. Favorites were Been It, Never Recover, Lovefool, and Choke.

Pink MoonNick Drake

Rated 10/10

This is the most instrumentally simplistic Nick Drake album which works to his benefit. Mostly just guitar and piano. His voice and lyrics are truly the centerpiece here. The whole thing feels so intimate. The smaller instrumental palette allows these songs to feel very cohesive. Tragic how he passed. Just a fantastic album.

And at last we have reached the last Bob Dylan album to make the list, and what an album it is. The first rock double album. Just an incredible achievement in songwriting. Masterful use of the harmonica. Bob invites you into his world and gives you time to soak in every good idea he has. 10/10 no notes.

I wanted to like this because I typically dig this style, but I just didn’t. His voice and flow are mostly uninteresting. Neat jazzy instrumentals though. Favorites were Bladerunners, and The Animist.

SOAD was a major blind spot for me prior to this. Of course I knew Chop Suey, but I didn’t know a single other song. This album was awesome. I like the changing dynamics with softer sections coming right before explosions of aggression. The vocals occasionally reminded me of the Dead Kennedys taken to the next extreme. Favorites were Suite-Pee, Sugar, Spiders, Soil, and Peephole.

The Godfather of Grunge proves once again why he’s one of the greats. The way Crazy Horse is able to extend these songs, some to over ten minutes, without them ever seeming stretched thin is impressive. Neil’s guitar absolutely shreds here. Favorites were Country Home, F*!#in Up, Over And Over, Love To Burn, and Days That Used To Be.

This is a good album. Groovy danceable instrumentals with memorable hooks. Of course I knew the hit, but the rest of this is pretty solid as well. Favorites were Deee-Lite Theme, Smile On, and Groove Is In The Heart.

The musical equivalent of those cartoons from the 30’s and 40’s that were really scary for some reason. Like Mickey Mouse getting dragged to hell by demons or something. Really glad I listened to this as it is so interesting, but not something I would listen to beyond a “huh that’s neat”. Favorites were Constantinople, Weight-Lifting Lulu, and The Electrocutioner.
