Cannot fathom how this made the list

Rated 6/10

I like the White Stripes a lot, but I wasn't super familiar with this album, other than "My Doorbell". A bit of a mix for me - some songs I added to playlists but also a few skips.

Rated 6/10

This was fine. I kind of liked the minimalistic rock sound they have, but it’s not something that really grabbed me and makes me want to come back to it. 3/5

Rated 4/10

really?

in a vacuum i would give this a respectable if unremarkable and sometimes irritating 3. (i can only be made to hear about jack white's problems with women for so long before i start to resent it.)

but because it has been presented to me as one of the most important albums of all time i have to give it a 2. presumably it was removed from the book once the contributor(s) recovered from mid white guy blues-rock fever

Doorbell ended up an earworm for the day

After LOVING the first 3 White Stripes albums I started to tire of them by Elephant, and then GBMS kind of passed me by. Nice tonal shift and some decent tunes, but wasn't mega keen.

Rated 4/10

It opens on the best song, then I kinda didn't process the rest of the album after that.

Pre Listen:
The only White Stripes song I know off the top of my head is "Seven Nation Army". That song defined a genre for a while, and also somehow got associated with "gamers" if I recall right. I think it's a decent enough song, a bit overplayed, but fine. Taking those expectations going in.

Notable Tracks:
The Nurse - What were they even trying to cook here? What a mess, horrible all around. Least favorite song on the album, skipped 3/4ths through.
Little Ghost - My favorite on the album. Wasn't expecting a folk sounding song on here, and it felt like coming up for a breath of air while drowning in cringe.
White Moon - Another low point. Skipped at 3/4th through as well, just wanted to tell the vocalist to shut up already.

Post Listen:
This album sucks.

Overall the instruments, vocals, lyrics, pacing, theme, style, all of it sucks. It sounds amateurish at best, shitty theatre-kid melodramatic on average, and intentionally piss-poor amateurish at worst. They employ random experimental music techniques here and there like audio chopping, stereo manipulation, and distortions, but none of it works, it's just at random.

Credit where credit is due, the variety in styles between songs is noteworthy. The inclusion of a marimba on some songs is unique, even if they didn't pull it off. The sound mixing is very well done. Those three reasons, and how this album isn't entirely unlistenable, saves it from being a 1.

I can see emotionally stunted young adults and teenagers adoring this album because they struggle to comprehend feelings of sadness, and believe they're irreparably depressed after breaking up with a partner they've had for less than a month. I'm not looking forward to the 2 other albums from these dweebs on this project. Low 2/5.

Blue Orchid and Denial Twist are bangers.

how old are you now anyway?

Some great songs on this one, feels like a bit of a random collection though rather than an album that flows together

Rated 8/10

i love the first song obviously. i like whatever that percussion is in the second song, marimba or something? it feels very high school band which you don't see too much in real music i guess but we rock with it. my doorbell is very rocky. there's quite the vibe change in little ghost. it's like almost bluesy but it feels not genuine and i don't really like it. overall it's pretty good though

Rated 8/10

Get Behind Me Satan is probably the least essential White Stripes album on this list (according to most of the reviewers on this site, i can't say for myself since i haven't gotten to Elephant yet) but overall, i found it a fun listen. I really liked a lot of the blues elements on this album as they definitely felt different from White Blood Cells. Jack White's vocals are definitely weaker here than they were in White Blood Cells but other than that, they were pretty good and Meg White sung on a song here too well which is cool. Other than the weaker vocals, i really can't think of many bad things to say about it so all i'll say is that it is a worthy addition to their discography.
Best Song: Instinct Blues
Worst Song: The Nurse
Side note: Is it just me or does Jack White kinda look like Johnny Depp on this cover?

Rated 2/10

"No, listen right. What if we just had basic percussion and a slightly whiney vocal AGAIN? It seemed very popular the last four times so let's not change a thing"

Rated 10/10

My toddler son and I (he's now 4) first started listening to The White Stripes at the beginning of last year, but this year has been the year we've been going through albums and videos and concerts and really immersing ourselves. The music is good (my son seems to enjoy it much more than I do for some reason and he's always ready to sing and play along on his toy guitar). The drums are simple but effective (they make quite the catchy beat) and the guitar work is amazing.

This album is different than its predecessors, however. There's more piano work, different instruments, and experimentation. There's still a couple of the trademark White Stripes bangers ("Blue Orchid", "Red Rain", "Instinct Blues"). "The Denial Twist" is one of my favorite songs because it's just such a catchy earworm. The songs are very introspective and definitely softer, but I think the Stripes can do both heavy and soft well.

Rated 6/10

It's fine. Basic blues with a few bangers

Rated 2/10

Well, we’ve already been through this once. I was wholly unimpressed by Elephant, the other White Stripes album here. Does that mean I’ll be wholly unimpressed by this one? Maybe. Yes. Definitely. There are maybe 3 good songs on this whole album. Everything else is kind of worthless. "Blue Orchid." Awesome. Great. Love it. "The Nurse." Interesting. Not great, but interesting. Then you're exposed to 5 whole songs of the most annoying, uninteresting, absolutely nothing music that you'll ever hear. It is just so wack."Instinct Blues" thankfully is incredible, and the songs following it are actually pretty bearable. Sadly the damage is already done, especially since the last two songs are trash. I don't know man. This album is really bad. I don't enjoy this much at all. There's no point, and even the good songs are pretty unimpressive. I wish it was good, but I genuinely don't know what I expected. Even the good is too formulaic to love. Even the great is too unimpressive to respect. Probably my least favorite album so far, other than MAYBE wild wood.

Some great iconic songs here. A fair bit of filler too. But overall it left a positive impression.

Rated 10/10

Not even my favorite White Stripes album. Still an easy 5 stars
