Surprisingly i like this more than i expected

Rated 6/10

Not sure I can give this higher than a 3. Washes over me, and not in a good way. Blends into the background very easily and doesnt grab me. Might be harsh.

This is one of those strange albums which doesn't really leave much of a lasting impression at all, but whilst on it's thoroughly enjoyable and a wonderfully relaxing listen. I have to remind myself that it exists and is saved in my library whenever shuffle brings me to it, but this brand of warm, enveloping dream pop with melancholic undertones is absolutely my thing.

The production on this is fantastic, offering a crystalline atmosphere and a kind of cinematic, hypnotic grandeur whilst the vocals are reverberating and pushed to the front. On the flip side, the album never really breaks out of a languid mid-tempo pace, which does allow it to forge a cohesive mood that is perfect for losing yourself in. However, the lines between tracks are prone to becoming blurred if you aren't actively engaged with the layered instrumentation.

All told, I'd scoop this up at the right price.

Tried listening and it put me to sleep. What I remember hearing seemed inoffensive.

A great album with a problem of every song sounding exactly the same. And I mean there is almost nothing different about each of these songs. Same synths, same vocals, same general motions. That's probably the reason why, even though some of the sounds produced here are absolutely spellbinding, magical wonderful, this album sits comfortably at a 3.21 on 1001albums. And that's sad too, because this album is made up of absolutely incredible, spectacular moments. The outro on "Walk in the Park," the first chorus to outro on "Zebra," the final 30 seconds of "Silver Soul" (bless Victoria Legrand's heart, that last sustained note is gorgeous.), the outro on "Lover of Mine," I could go on. But every song sounds mostly indistinguishable from the next, even if they're all distinct. It's really quite sad because I really love all of these songs. They really are all very distinct, memorable songs, with great vocals, great musicality, production, all of it.

But there is still a lot of good here! "Used To Be" is heartbreaking, a lush, devastating song of a once-familiar face coming home after a long time of being away, and a fear of them having changed drastically, though the speaker still looks forward to it ("Coming Home / Any Day Now..." in the outro... it's so beautiful TvT). The buildup to the chorus on opener "Zebra" is one of the more obviously awesome moments in 2010s indie, and the chord progression as the vocals burst through is perfect for the moment. The synth riff in the chorus of "Walk in the Park" is so awesome too, it gets stuck in my head incredibly often. I think that, frankly, even if you can't enjoy this album because of its samey-ness, you should at least appreciate each song separately, because every single one is worth listening to, completely.

There's also a lot to be heard here in terms of influence across the 2010s. Alvvays's more psychedelic/shoegazey side is laid out plain and simple here, even if they did take a more twee, jangly, even confessional kind of approach to this style than Beach House did. This album in particular, however, also really has its fingerprints all on a lot of the dreamier indie of the late 2010s and early 2020s, a la Wolf Alice. Generally just a really important album. I think this one that should definitely get a listen if you want to better understand how indie has evolved over the past 15-ish years.

DOES IT BELONG ON THE LIST: YES
REASON: influence, relevance, quality

Rated 6/10

Dream pop makes me tired. Maybe that's a compliment, but I don't want to be tired.

Rated 2/10

Was almost a 2 until the unearned minute and a half fade out of the last song. Really just unenthusiastic, sterile, uninteresting music.

Rated 4/10

In 2010 Vampire Weekend's Contra came out. Its not on the list. In fact, none of their albums are on the list. But this is

I can imagine this would work as a soundtrack to an indie movie. But on its own it doesn't offer much of anything.

Rated 6/10

Favorite track(s): Silver Soul, Walk in the Park, 10 Mile Stereo

Rated 6/10

It was ok. Nothing bad, it was just boring

I've only heard of Beach House recently because of Space Song. This album wasn't as good as that song though

During my indie era I was never a Beach House girl and now it was a reminder why 💁‍♀️

Rated 6/10

This was a very linear record. It didn't blow me away by any means, but I might give it another shot sometime. Very dreamy, almost Cocteau Twins-esque at times, but not as good of course. I enjoyed it as played in the background.

Rated 5/10

A lovely sounding album which is very well made and performed, it doesn't hit 4 star for me purely out of personal preference as it's just a little too slow for my liking. 3.5

esse inicinho deles eh sempre interessante de ouvir. ainda com um pezinho no indie, mas já onírico demais.

muito bacana gosto mto, nem eh o melhor deles e já eh absurdo. queria muito um show deles....

'Any way you run, you run before us / Black & white horse arching among us.' As white as The Shins, meaning as white as you can get, Beach House makes music just as gorgeous as The Shins', meaning as gorgeous as this perspective can produce. 'You let us in the wooden house / To share in all the wealth.' Dreamy in all facets of the word, that is, dreamy b/c luxuriant & walled-off from reality, Teen Dream is produced to a sweet perfection, & its loving cadences are no soulless messages of luxury. But rampant lushness like this is for folk w/ a beach house, or multiple, not for the common lot of humanity. Do I think there's no place for music like this? I do not, hence a rating that expresses my appreciation. But yeah, they're finally too pallid.

Rated 4/10

Every song goes on foreverrrrrr yawnnnnnn. Bloody indie music, just dull, just stop

Rated 8/10

Never listened to this before the challenge somehow and wow what a mistake. This is light and airy dream pop, pulls from a few other places as well. Norway, Zebra, Silver Soul, Used to Be, 10 Mile Stereo are all killer tracks. Gotta be a 4

Rated 4/10

Everything on here except for 10 Mile Stereo felt boring to me. 5/10
