It was ok. There was some good music, but it kind of felt like it never wrapped up or stuck with me.
Rated 10/10
The title track is 17 minutes long, and yet...

Organ-based psychedelic rock sound. Kinda cool but definitely sounds dated now.

It's a classic.

Short and sweet.

Nice Simpsons song, mid rest of it yaknow. Bring the drama divas x

3/24/26 - listened while driving. Very Doors-esque. I liked it and would listen again. But I wanted more songs and less of the 17 minute title track. Debated a rating but going to stick with a 4.
Top Song - Are You Happy

So far, pretty milquetoast/boilerplate psychedelia. Sort of Beatles, sort of Doors, but not anywhere near as good. That trend remained all the way until the title track, which was 10x better than the rest of the album. This won't be fun to rate
⭐⭐ For the album
⭐⭐⭐⭐ For the song

This is great fun. A bit early prog, a bit metal, a bit sweet 60s pop/rock. The title track is 17minutes of goofy fun, even though the drum solo is a bit rudimentary and goes on a bit long.

As cool as the main musical idea is, In Da Gadda Da Vida does not make this album great. It honestly just barely makes it good. I'd put this at a low 3. But everyone should hear the hook of the titular song.

First impressions are of a group of bespectacled Austin Powers lookalikes in purple velvet suits. Very Doors sounding.
I adore the keyboards on this. The guitar isn't too bad either. Subsequent listens highlight the mediocrity of the bass, drums and vocal though.
Best track is the whole of side 2, although the drum solo spoils it a little, the keyboards ride to the rescue. I even caught a snippet of 'Good Rest Ye Merry Gentleman' in there.
Biggest selling US Album of 1968 you say? It's not bad, but that surprised me.
Rated 4/10
This sold over 30 million copies worldwide? How?!
In 1969 it outsold Led Zeppelin I, Johnny Cash At Folson Prison and The Beatles White Album.
How high was everyone in 1969?!
2/5.

man we shouldn't have ordered the appetizers

Lots of meh on this album. The one track everyone knows is inexplicably long. I had it on in the background and I was so confused when the main riff kicked back in I thought something had gone wrong.
Rated 2/10
Side A: Dull. Only thing keeping me awake is horrible production.
Side B: Excellent 2min50 single. Album version inexplicably dragged out to 17 uninteresting minutes. Bart Simpson did it better.

old Doug Ingle. . .
lol, Tidal has him listed as "Doug Tingle"

This is an ok prog rock album, but I'm not sure why it's on here. 2*

They struck gold with the title track, but mixed about 14 minutes of bronze into it to completely diminish its splendor. The other tracks? Nothing precious about those metals either. Standard fare psychedelia.
Rated 6/10
The title song is the most noteworthy thing, and other people would do extended jams better.
Rated 4/10
Apparently I am in the minority here, but Iron Butterfly blows.
Listen, I love a good long epic song, but the one song anyone can name on this album is 17 minutes of ass.
An argument could be made that this isn't even within the top 20 albums of 1968 let alone making the cut of albums you MUST hear before you die.
2 stars just for what could be considered its influence on heavy music.
