Listening to a construction site directly out of my window would sound more like music and be more enjoyable.

Rated 4/10

Kind of fun and crazy, but also kind of fatiguing for a whole album.

Shit. From a butt. A few cool guitar licks, but this does nothing for me.

Rated 2/10

I hate leaving reviews like this but this album really just felt like meaningless noise to me. I love all sorts of “noise” albums but the difference is that I can usually tell what the artist was trying to express. In this case I just felt completely lost and didn’t enjoy myself.

Ha lekker. Blues. Geluid wat harder en gaan! Aaaaiii....auw.

Rated 6/10

This is definitely an acquired taste thing. But the energy on this album is undeniable.

Rated 4/10

Music can be both abrasive AND good, so in that sense this album is batting .500.

Hui, so schlecht, dass man manchmal lachen muss

Fucked up, scuzzed out blues rock. Like if The White Stripes made music with the intent of starting fights. And they have *real* blues credibility too. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion has recorded with R.L. Burnside, and that's good enough for me. The weird and noisy take on garage rock and blues here has some pure muscle, and surprisingly good songs. Frankly, I think the screaming, the insane lo-fi riffs, and threatening bizarre sound result in one of the more exciting mutations on the genre I've ever heard.

Rated 6/10

I like a couple of Jon Spencer Blues Explosions singles but I think this probably works better in short bursts (or explosions if you will).

44 minute garage punk jawn? I didn’t think those existed. Whatever let’s see how this is. Well, I’ve listened to it now, and let me tell you, it’s exactly what you’d expect. It’s… too long, too samey, not crazy enough at times, and kind of just like if white stripes were way punkier. Which that’s not bad at all, it’s just not really my thing, especially if you’re going to make it more than like 25 minutes long. This is 20 minutes more than 25 minutes, and that is its problem. Anyway I had a nice time in London today, it was pretty cool. I saw “my neighbour totoro” in theatre. This album is alright.

Half this album has a beautiful energetic feel, but it's absence is obvious on the other half.

Rated 3/10

Not awful but not really what I’d consider to be good or mediocre either.

Awful cover art though. Who came up with this shit?

It’s bamboozling that this lp is on the list of 1001 albums you should hear. I say this not because Jon Spencer Blues Explosion aren’t my thing, they are, but because this isn’t their best work by a long way.

The album suffers from excessive compression. This makes it loud but without the dynamic range a trio like the Blues Explosion need where there no space. Performances are sound but fewer stand out tracks. Besk is the guest appearance from Rufus Thomas singing Chicken Dog (are all his songs about dogs).

I haven’t listened to this album in years and on revisiting I realise why - there are many better Jon Spencer LPs. I recomend Acme (or its remix album) and Extra Width. Also worth checking out is the lp backing up bluesman RL Burnside an Ass Pocket of Whiskey.

It’s particularly sad that this album is on the list because it’s their only entry and the only entry from the fantastic 90’s garage punk scene that lead up to the White Stripes commercialised breakthrough. There’s no Gorries, Dirtbombs, Mummies, any of Ian Sveneous’s bands like the Make-Up, Detroit Cobras etc.

Rated 2/10

This was genuinely painful to get through. The constant shrieking was unbearable. I can’t put into words just how unpleasant of an experience listening to this album was.

Rated 2/10

There will always be a near endless supply this kind of fundamentally silly dirty rock n roll post blues band because the way electric guitars work mean it's the easiest and most fun kind of music to play, the first thing you can do in a group setting, and a ready template to pick up and goof around with. Totally understandable why these bands exist, much less so why they have an audience - I guess it's for guys who like to say "they don't make music like this anymore" while listening to music like this being made right now.
