Sad news: boring! Where's the drama diva?

It's fine background music, but we really need something more exciting than that I'm afraid.

Rated 8/10

Can't say I'm a huge fan of the organ, but it's pleasant enough regardless.

Rated 10/10

another entry in the "this sounds nothing like what the cover art would lead you to believe" category

A+++ Hammond organ, will listen again

Beautiful album

What a gem. The exact reason I'm doing this project. Loved it.

Boardering on shitty Muzak but doesn't quite get there

Rated 6/10

Love the electric organ but have trouble connecting when it’s center stage.

Rated 10/10

Groovin’, the album. Everyone on the album is just nailing it. This is not in my rotation of feel good jazz.

Rated 8/10

That was pretty good, but I have to say I like my jazz a bit more punchy. Hard bop is characterized by this slower tempo, and its blues influences that give it a distinctly rhythmic vibe. It's very relaxing, and the talent is definitely there, but while this is perfect music for a dark and moody jazz club in a basement, the predictability of the music can get a bit boring. A faster tempo would definitely improve the oomph factor.

Доволі дефолтна музика, але непогана й справді тепла, якщо взагалі про музику так можна висловитись.

Rated 4/10

Kind of bog standard really, but not terrible at all

Rated 8/10

I haven't ever heard of this artist, but he is at the root of a lot of stuff I like. It's cool when you get to trace the lineage back to the originator. Green Onions and the Johnny Lewis Quartet's Chitlins con Carne are the two that come right to the top of mind when I think of who was likely influenced.

This is good stuff. I can definitely foresee this setting the mood on the back patio or by the fire in the winter.

Oh damn! As someone who’s always loved Booker T and the MGs I’m shocked Jimmy Smith, an obvious influence, is someone I’ve never heard. This is nothing short of amazing. Another perfect album.

Un poco me aburrió porque el jazz no es mi género favorito.

Rated 6/10

Like a lot of others I will add this to a playlist for my next dinner party.

Bluesy, jazzy, laid back., but is it good ? Kind off.

Its biggest strength (in being unobtrusive background music) is its biggest weakness.

Rated 6/10

An enjoyable 40 minutes of smooth, soulful jazz. One which is very pleasing but not so pleasing that it fades into the background. I was surprised by how much I recognised from film and television. Jimmy is clearly one of those artists which is integrated and hidden within the culture.

Rated 6/10

Es muy tranquilo, no llega a aburrir pero se llega a sentir como musica de fondo, son canciones largas y mantienen el sonido con el que inician

Rated 6/10

Back at the Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith was my introduction to the Hammond organ, and what a fantastic sound it is. From the opening notes, the organ completely dominates the album and gives it a distinctive character that is both soulful and incredibly cool.

The overall sound is relaxed, warm and effortlessly stylish. There’s a groove running through the entire record that makes it very easy to sink into, and at times I could hear elements that would later influence the sounds of Northern Soul and ska. Whether that's actually the case or not, there’s definitely something timeless about the feel of this album.

What I enjoyed most was the atmosphere it creates. It’s the kind of record you can put on in the background and enjoy, but it also rewards closer listening thanks to the quality of the musicianship. The Hammond organ is the star of the show, but every player contributes to the album's laid-back charm.

Favourite track: “Back at the Chicken Shack”
Least favourite track: Every track is worth listening to, although the album can feel a little repetitive at times
Album artwork: Lovely dog on the cover!
