You can really hear that all the money here went into the cool Synth work and production, they couldn't even afford clothes for the girls on the cover. I really should listen to this Roxy Music album more, because it might just be my new favorite after listening to it. It has all the energy of my favorite songs of their early work, but even more of it and done even better. I can't really find flaw with it, just really up my alley.

Liked this when it was weirder. The boogie-woogie rock parts reminded me of bad Aladdin Sane numbers.
Amazing production though! 3.5 but will round up.

i only had it in me to listen to this once today so i dont have many thoughts on this album but i liked it fine! doesnt hit for me the way their later stuff does . the album cover is excellent, i would buy the vinyl just for that lol
definitely can hear that eno sound in a few tracks, somebody give this guy a yamaha dx7 already
all i want is you is my favorite for sure

For this kind of album cover, it sounds too consistent and unsexy.

Rated 4/10

Yet another solid album within the Roxy Music discography. While it is up to the quality standard of the band and by no means is a bad record, it is the weakest among the first four albums in their discography, and simultaneously feels less relevant than 'Avalon' as a testament of their later era. All of this to say that this album should have been replaced by 'Stranded' as the better Roxy Music album in '73.

2.5/5. I was very indifferent on this one on the whole. I quite liked the opener “the thrill of it all” as well as the track “Casanova” but the rest of it was very in one ear and out the other, just some meat-and-potatoes 70’s glam rock. there wasn’t any moments where I actively hated it, but also very few moments where I liked/loved it either outside of the previously mentioned highlights. Meh.

This is far from the worst album on here but I started losing interest in it before the end of track 2. I’m actually struggling to remember much about it, it was definitely an album I listened to.

Rated 10/10

phenomenal!! loved the weirdness and the contrast between the album cover and the vibe.

‘70s rock, this should’ve been right up my alley, but sadly I didn’t like a single song.

Rated 6/10

It's a little too theatrical for my tastes overall. Fun listen though. Not sure it's something I would return to often, but certainly has some replay value.

Wonderful variety of really good songs - I mean even a bit of harmonica can't spoil them.
Superb production quality.
Ferry's voice is brilliant as usual.
And then to top it off - throw in some half naked ladies on the album cover.

I’m slightly above a 5.

It’s honestly just that good, or at the very least, it’s right down my alley for slightly bombastic ‘70s rock. This is Roxy Music’s second album without Brian Eno in the mix, and surprisingly enough, his absence isn’t really felt here. I really liked the instrumentals here. These are all constantly pushing & evolving to big climaxes in the soundscape, with a bit of chaos involved to get there, yet the excellent mixing leaves these all still pretty easy & engaging to listen to.

These tracks are written well too, if a little bit somber & horny at points, & Bryan Ferry’s search for a dopamine hit is a good underline for most of these tracks. It creates a sort of omnipresent tension that helps give weight to his vocals & helps justify the instrumentation going as nutty as it sometimes does. It’s a tension that releases itself by the end of “A Really Good Time” & lets everything come to a pretty pleasing ending in “Prairie Rose”, which just feels like a jam session about Texas. The pace & flow of this album is pretty strong – I did think “The Thrill of It All” was a little long/bold for an opener, but it doesn’t feel that way after having listened to the whole thing.

Overall, I’m just impressed by what’s here. Mileage will obviously vary on how the bombast plays to other people’s ears, or if that cover is too distracting to take the music quite as seriously as it may (or may not) deserve. I sort of get why it’s only got a 3.1 on the site, but I think it should be a little higher. How can you listen to “Out of the Blue”’s instrumental section & not feel some of that energy? It’s an energy that carries throughout the album & it has me slightly above a 5 here. I think it’s a really strong 41 minutes, and for my tastes, one that’s deserving to be on the list. Super fun stuff.

Their best cover? Their worst album?

Rated 8/10

Just really great

Rated 6/10

Album cover is pretty epic sigma mode

Feel like the songs are trying to follow the recipe that made a lot of Bowie songs great but doesn’t quite have all the right ingredients

Great cover. Not so great music. 2/5.

Rated 6/10

I must say, glam rock is quite fun! Nothing too special, though it has the high energy of traditional rock injected with a hell of a lot of pop razzle dazzle (that provided some much needed balance). Didn't know what I was expecting from the cover art, though I came away from this record feeling lighter than I had 40 minutes prior.

Ah, meneer Eno was inmiddels vertrokken.

Kak...

On my first, surface-level listens of Roxy Music, I didn't quite understand what was so exciting and radical about this band other than some of the Eno bleep bloops in the early 70s. As I've learned more about pop music in the late 70s through the 80s, I now hear their influence everywhere. They sat somewhere between prog and glam, but avoided the worst excesses of both genres -- they sound like the first "new wave" band.
