From a band whose name I know, who has a couple songs I can sing along with, but have never listened to a whole album to an album I'll be adding to my personal collection and doing a deeper dive on.

Rated 4/10

I really wasn't feeling this, had the ingredients for a good funk record but I didn't enjoy any of the songs here

Rated 6/10

This album grew on me the more I listened to it and recognized some of the tracks like “You can make it if you try” and “Everyday people.”

Boom lakalakalaka

Great instrumentals. Corny at times, but that doesn't mean it's not great.

4.0/5.0: Great

Rated 6/10

good instrumentals but a bit annoyingly repetitive.

Rated 8/10

Funky.

What a brilliant, what a powerful, what a life-affirming record, what a soulful perfomance. Also, there are amazing openers and then there is another category, in which the title track falls... How to classify it? "Transcendental first songs"? Yeah, sounds about right. And what's even more remarkble is that the rest of the album lives up to the promise made within the first minutes.

Слай це клас, дуже, як зараз заведено казати, вайбова музика. В мене є їхній концертний альбом на вінілі, де майже всі хіті зі Stand! зіграні ще з більшою енергією. Тому власне давно люблю і поважаю.

Rated 6/10

I liked this one better than the other Sly on the list but it's still not really my thing.

Rated 8/10

Yet another perfectly enjoyable album whilst it was on, but another one that I can't see myself being in any hurry to put on again. The cool, funky, varied guitar licks and the ever-important, defiantly optimistic social commentary really should dictate otherwise, so this is perhaps just a case of not being in the right mood for it to fully envelop me today.

[that day came just over a month later on 23rd February. A mate encouraged me to relisten and it worked a lot better for me in a different headspace. Duly upgraded to 4 stars.]

funky, easy listen. 3.5

Good psychedelic funk lp.

Rated 8/10

Very groovy and fun listen. I enjoyed it from start to finish. The vocals were great, the arrangements were great, but it's not a 5 star record. It's really close though.
Also, track 2. That's it.

Rated 6/10

Groovy, could've been wilder though. Once again, a pretty average album, not truly worthy of a 3, but clearly not a 2 either. I don't particularly like or dislike any song, oh except sex machine, what's going on there? Why is he getting waterboarded at some point? Was he about to drop the heaviest bars known to mankind and was just silenced? Thirteen minutes is an egregious length for a song like that, so that's the only one I can say I hate (with a passion, actually), like if some day I get paralyzed from waist down and that song starts playing, I swear to god I'm crawling across the room to stop it.

P.S. As Cher and Future once said DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS AND SO ON AND SO ON AND SCOOBY DOOBY DO (don't come for my neck i had no idea that was a real song until now).

Rated 8/10

It’s funky, it’s political, it’s groundbreaking. It stands the test of time. A few meandering tracks are holding me back from giving it five stars. Although in the place of the music world and its influence, it may deserve them…

Rated 8/10

Pretty funky and fun, has some solid classics throughout. A 13 minute long mostly instrumental track wasn’t too necessary though, in my opinion. Would round this up to a 4/5

Rated 10/10

YES.

I'm more familiar with the "Greatest Hits" collection, but this is more or less the same thing. It's a real shame that this group didn't put out more music. It's all great.

“Stand!” by Sly & The Family Stone is so very 1969 that it almost hurts. The instrumental production, which seems very simple from today's perspective, the organ sounds, the flower power-esque optimistic vocals with wide-open throats, the way melodies are created with a quick drop-off run at the end, the sudden scat interludes... Apart from these details, which make you smile, the band grooves very well and tightly and has such a positive vibe that it's really contagious – feel-good music that you hardly find anymore today. While the title track “Stand!” sticks well, but is a little too intrusive for me in terms of the clichés mentioned, my personal highlight is the bass groove in “Sing a Simple Song.”
