Good indie rock band, that I've always struggled to enjoy.
No particular reason, just find it a harsh listen.

Long form and meandering. Was ok in the background I guess.
Rated 6/10
Not sure I agree with a compilation being on the list, but I do enjoy a bit of the Hives.

I just don’t get the Doors. This is music that is revered and yet I can’t hear what others hear.
Long form and meandering I can enjoy, but is just dull as well.

Have become a massive fan of Jack White’s solo output and the Raconteurs, but I’ve historically found The White Stripes to be a bit of a slog….I therefore skipped this one back in the day.
So first listen….apart from the My Doorbell single.
This is decent. Still quite sparsely populated like you’d expect from the White Stipes, but there’s enough of the stuff I do like, to make this an intriguing listen.
The way the simple drum patterns crash into Jack White’s complex ideas just works somehow.

First listen. Never been exposed to this band before.
Wow - this is my jam! Absolute belter of an album. Nothing too deep going on, but Swampsnake sets the tone - just flat out rock n roll. Foot stomping goodness mostly, although the dip into doo-wop spoils it a bit.
Straight 4

Was never into Joy Division at the time, just too bleak.
Still don’t really get it.

Eclectic mix of songs, beautiful production and one of the great voices of his generation.
Always enjoy 80% of it when I put it on. It’s a flawed masterpiece for me. Solid 4.
Rated 8/10
This is amazing. How did I miss this first time around?? Production is very 90s, but fits nicely with the songs.
Going into rotation. Straight in as a 4

Brilliant debut….great band.

First impression - it’s the American Stone Roses with added noise.
Dirty Boots a strong opening. Stays strong for a few songs, but feels like they ran out of ideas a bit and start stretching songs out with distortion and noise.

What are the odds, the day after the news that Dolly had passed away, this comes up as the album for today….
So, turns out this is as old as me, and to my shame I’ve never listened to this before. Country has never been my thing….
And to my very pleasant surprise this is very, very good. Storytelling songs and the production isn’t too over the top.
Solid 3 from me. That’s a massive compliment given my tastes.
Rest in peace Dolly.

Love anything with Tracey Thorn. This is a fabulous album that’s aged like fine wine.
Easy 4

Well this is the exception that proves the rule. A rap album that I can respect and at times even enjoy.
Lauren Hill a generational talent…a shame we’ve heard so little from her over the years.
3 for me.

Not for me.
Rated 10/10
Now this is one of my favourite albums of all time. It has aged like fine wine, still as amazing today as when I first listened to it as a small boy.
It is impossible for me to not listen to the whole album when I put it on, and when it’s finished you’re always left wishing there was one more song.
Musicianship is off the charts, songwriting is stunning. It’s pretty much perfect.
Finally it’s one of the most amazing sounding records of all time. Find a good UK first pressing on vinyl and prepare to be stunned at the soundstage and dynamics.
Masterpiece. I’d give this more than 5 if I could.
Rated 8/10
His best solo album. Probably his best album of them all.
All the angst and grit of the Jam has been polished smooth and what remains is an album of great songs and sung by a singer you feel has seen a few things.
It’s not perfect, but it’s an easy 4 for me.
Rated 8/10
Time Machine Pop! Wonderful 80s album. Way more depth than you’d perhaps expect if you only know Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.
Just the right balance of quirky and commercial.
Easy 4 for me.
Rated 2/10
Don’t understand gangster rap. Not music to me.
Clearly others disagree, but I remain happy in my ignorance about this genre.
