I was ready to hate on this, and say that it's one Springsteen album too many, but I guess this was recorded just after 9/11 and the people of America were looking to one of their folk heroes for reassurance. And Bruce delivered. But it's also far too long.

ImagineJohn Lennon

Rated 8/10

Unlike McCartney, at least Lennon had something to say and didn't just sing about his chickens or whatever.
"Imagine" is great (I'm hearing it again in the Starbucks I'm sitting in right now), it drags a bit in the bluesy stuff, but really comes back together for a triumphant finale, with "How Do You Sleep" blowing the roof off the whole thing.

Rated 8/10

I feel like this was the chestburster moment when indie music stopped sucking and started sounding pretty good.

Up there with the best and most innovative albums of the 70s, there's so much range here but the songs are also so catchy. They pushed things forwards as much as Kraftwerk and Eno.

"Being Boring" is good, but I'm not sure if PSB are that much of an album band really. I'm always trying to listen out for their biggest (and best) songs, but I never hear them.

Not a huge fan of either of these artists, but this works. "Mermaid Avenue" augments Bragg's miserable onanism with more authentic alt-country rock, and gives Wilco a more intelligent and political edge. So it turns out two negatives can make a positive.
