I thought I'd like this.
But I didn't.

"My Doorbell" is a simplistic nursey rhyme of a track in the same shit league as Lennon's "Imagine". How either song became a hit is anybody's guess.

Other tracks are in a similar vein. The whole album sounds tinny and, although others have complimented the drumming, I found the drum sound is weak and like it's been recorded on a toy set. "Instinct Blues" is a tune up? And Meg White can't sing.

Anything else?

No I think I'm done here.

Icky Thump is better.

"Blue Orchid" er klassisk White Stripes, og høres ut som den kanskje er overskuddsmateriale fra en av de tidligere platene. Men åpningssporet sier lite om hva slags plate dette er.

For om White Stripes regnes som et gitarband, så er denne plata et utskudd i katalogen. Faktisk vil jeg si det er et pianoalbum, i alle fall et nesten akustisk album. Det er mindre garasjerockinnflytelser og mer country, blues og soul. Mens "The Denial Twist" og "My Doorbell" flørter litt med hiphop.

I had Jack White's solo album for album 36, but this is the first White Stripes album I've had. Just a few songs in, it's clear that this album is not just the basic, garagey, yet infectiously catchy rock they are best known for. It's an attempt to broaden the sonic palate of the band with piano ballads and even some vibraphone here and there. This doesn't make for a bad album, because Jack White can write songs that are good and enjoyable, something all too many of the project's 2000s offerings lack(see my average rating for the 2000s compared to all other decades).

....ehhh..? I didn't hate it but it's not for me.

Standout: The Denial Twist • I'm Lonely (But Ain't That Lonely Yet)

Rated 6/10

Two hits surrounded by uninspiring forgettable songs.

Rated 8/10

This is the album that got me into the White Stripes and it holds up!

Rated 6/10

After two listens, I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about this album. It seems to snap between dreadfully dull and genuinely inventive every other song almost. Every time I felt like I'd had enough and was about to turn it off, something would come on that convinced me to give it another chance.

I've never been all that keen on The White Stripes' particular brand of blues rock, even though I actually quite liked Jack Whites' other project, the Raconteurs, back in the day, so it's no surprise that it's the more garage rock-style tracks on this record that I preferred. Red Rain was my favourite of the bunch, which probably has a lot to do with how different it sounds from the Stripes' usual fare.

I could maybe see myself giving a higher rating to a version of this album with a modified tracklist, but as it is, I doubt I'll ever listen to it all the way through again, so three stars feels about fair.

Favourite tracks: Red Rain, Instinct Blues, The Denial Twist
Least favourite track: My Doorbell (does anyone actually like this irritating racket?)

Rated 4/10

Naah. "Thinking about my Dolphin when they are gonna wing it" must be one of the more funny things I misheard.

Rated 4/10

Probably my least favourite White Stripes album and I think a definite start of the end of the band. Meg isn't a great drummer and it shows on this album as they tried to move away from their signature power sound into something more subtle. Some of that clumsy charm that carried through the first few albums started to wear off a little.

Rated 6/10

Umm it's not my favourite, probably won't listen again, maybe a couple of the last tracks but yea

Rated 8/10

Maybe not my favourite white Stripes album, but still pretty good.

Rated 6/10

Not convinced this deserves a place in the list. White Blood Cells and Elephant, yeah sure. This is a lesser White Stripes album. No bad thing, it's got some good stuff on here, but it's a little inconsistent and is not, in my opinion, essential.

Rated 8/10

Although I like this album a lot (and bought it!), I'm not that surprised to read it was dropped from later editions of the book. If you've already got Elephant and White Blood Cells, then the White Stripes are pretty well represented on this list. That being said, this has some great songs and I like that they are trying a different sound.

Rated 8/10

I like the White Stripes. This is slightly atypical for them, what with the marimbas, etc., but it's still just as listenable. Perhaps not quite their best, but a solid high four.

Rated 6/10

Another rock countdown staple! They're not as hated-by-me as the Mars Volta, but not one of my favorites, either (I don't have this album, even digitally, and from 2005 I have a lot of albums). A lot of loud guitar/drum stuff, and the vocals aren't particularly appealing. Lotta shakers. I felt very defensive of Meg White because people made fun of her drumming so much, not that I know anything about what makes for good drumming. A lot of people also got confused about if Jack & Meg were married or siblings (a classic). And now they're neither!

'My Doorbell' deserves particular attention for being one of the most intrusive songs of all time. I think of it approximately once a week. One of my greatest song pet peeves is absurd repetition, which this has in droves (c.f. Avril rhyming "dead" with "dead" or the "sucking on a chili dog" youtube edit of Jack and Diane).

'Red Rain' sounds a lot like 'Blue Orchid', which I assume is intentional.

Rated 8/10

While Elephant remains the pinnacle of The White Stripes' discography, Get Behind Me Satan marks the onset of a gradual decline. The production, though polished, feels slightly overdone compared to their earlier, raw recordings. There's an obvious ambition to replicate the success of "Seven Nation Army" with "Blue Orchid", but it falls somewhat short. The album is well-crafted and consistent, but it ultimately feels like a rehash of previous ideas, lacking the same spark as their earlier work. However, "My Doorbell" and "The Denial Twist" have stood the test of time and remain staples in my playlist.
