En-TactThe Shamen

Rated 4/10

This was a bit of a slog. I only knew The Shamen for their hits (all two of them) but they were fun enough so went in with high hopes.
This is like New Order meets The Orb meets East 17. In not a good way. The rap verses were dreadful, and the middle of the album was just not up to the standard of other dance music of that era.
I didn’t outright hate it but it was rather boring in a genre that I usually really like.

The lyrical, slower stuff is really nice but it’s weighed down by boring 70s boogie-woogie rock cliches. Also that Stones cover is nowt on the original. Totally fine, but a mixed bag.

They have to be doing this purposely. Ozzy dies and the day after I get a Sabbath album. Dolly dies and I get one of her albums. This algorithm is cruel.
Anyway. This is a great, short and sweet country album that manages to be quite varied across its brief length. What a talent, RIP Dolly x

I love how on Police albums you can easily tell if Sting DIDN’T write one of the songs as it’s so totally different.
Anyway, I like the Police more when they are faster and punkier rather than reggae, and this album has a lot of the former so it’s pretty good in my book. 3.5 but will round up

ViolatorDepeche Mode

Rated 10/10

For a while this was my favourite album of all time. Perfectly blends catchy melodies with an eerie darkwave vibe. Only meh track is that weird interlude after Enjoy the Silence. But either way… amazing album.

This has aged the worst out of the 2000s garage/post-punk revival scene. Liked it a bit more when they slowed it down towards the end and stopped focussing on being rock stars.
