I'm not a metalhead, but I don't mind having a bit of metal in my life. This doesn't really do it for me though.

Rated 10/10

PURE PERFECTION. Dark, growling, trashy: Sepultura is metal at its best.

Rated 10/10

THIS, right here, is my kind of music. Pounding, furious rhythms, loud distorted guitar, and the pure anger expression by the vocals. Very few listening experiences on this list match this for sheer ferocity and righteous anger. Of course, this makes for one of my favorite albums. I own a copy on CD, it's that good. I understand that this style of music isn't for everybody, but it is very much my kind of music. It deserves a way higher rating than 2.7.

This album is ranked #22 of 23 albums for 1991. Other 1991 albums rated by me:
Ten(2/23)-4
The Low End Theory(4/23)-5
Blue Lines(6/23)-5
Achtung Baby(7/23)-1
Qui Seme le Vent Recolte le Tempo(15/23)-4
Spiderland(17/23)-4
Rising Above Bedlam(23/23)-2

Two whole Sepultura records on this list is pretty cool, though it is surprising that this one and not Chaos A.D. is included. Still, this one is heavy as hell and full of enough variation to keep things interesting. Given the dearth of metal deep cuts on here, I’m giving it 5 stars.

Rated 6/10

Probably significant because it's a South American metal band. I don't consider this a great album though. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

Rated 8/10

Didn't enjoy this as much as Roots, but will definitely be listening to it again though. I do wish they had included more metal bands though, instead of multiple albums from the same bands. 2 Sepultura but no Tool is a head scratcher!

Rated 6/10

Noise, but at least it had substance.

Rated 6/10

Not enough, I don't know, soul maybe. Angry industrial grit is 100% there and present but I don't believe they believe in it somehow.

Rated 6/10

thrash, sounds like a natural evolution of what metallica was doing. i think i prefer roots?

“Hey, ChatGPT, knock me out a nine-track album of generic thrash metal. I require thumping bass, chugging guitar riffs, growling vocals and the occasional squealing solo.”

I’m very late to the Sepultura party—I’ve only just arrived—and Arise certainly isn’t bad. But to my ears, it’s generic thrash with very little feeling or personality of its own.

On the plus side, they beat AI to it by about 25 years.

Rated 8/10

I’m at a 3.5 that I’ll just bump up to a 4.

I mean, you can’t say the album doesn’t fucking rip from an instrumental standpoint. The fury from the guitars & percussion feels absurdly potent on each track, and with the shorter runtime here compared to the 72 minutes of “Roots”, the overall energy just feels a lot stronger & more focused. It’s incredible to listen to, and when they’re at their best, it feels like an unstoppable force that’s up there with some of the best thrash metal of the era.

The problem with this album, however, is the complete lack of bigger variety – practically every track here starts with a diatribe about how it sucks to be born, how the human race is doomed, & how existing is torture, & how Earth needs to be purged of its sickness as a planet to have a chance at existing, or some other relatively defeatist line of thinking. Coming off of something as positive & optimistic as “Definitely Maybe”, it’s just highly jarring. It wouldn’t be a big issue if it weren’t the same thing on every single fucking track, creating a homogenization that underlines the whole thing in a bad way.

If their instruments are an unstoppable force, then both Cavalera’s & Kisser’s lyrics are the immovable object, with a persistence towards cynicism that just drags the whole thing down a bit. Honestly, if there was just a bit more variety & a bigger sense of atmosphere (ala Megadeth or Metallica) as opposed to just going full throttle on every track, I’d feel pretty inclined to be near a 5. As it stands, the entire album experience feels longer than the 42 minute runtime on account of each track feeling way too similar, no matter how technically talented they are here. It’s a good set of tracks, but not a super cohesive album.

I’m just not too surprised at the 2.73 here – it’s great to listen to, but it just doesn’t feel as engaging as it could be. I think it definitely deserves to be on the list for its country’s representation, & since someone else won’t care as much about the lyrics & just fucking rock out to the instrumentals (deservedly so). For me, it's a 3.5 that I’ll bump up to a 4, though just barely.

I’m not big on metal but I surprised myself by liking Roots by Sepultura, mainly because I thought the addition of latin rhythms was really interesting. This one doesn't really have the rhythms, but I still quite enjoyed it, so maybe I just kind of like Sepultura?

Rated 8/10

Sepultura released Roots when I was 14 years old. That album blew my mind, and shaped how I expect metal to sound. This is a very different sound, and really closer to generic thrash metal. It's not bad, but it's missing all the more interesting rythmic elements that made me love Sepultura in the first place.

Rated 6/10

Not for me but I trust the metal fellas

Rated 6/10

This is really not my thing, but I mopped the floors and washed the windows while I listened to this and it made me feel like a teenager who's mad about doing chores. I appreciate it.

Rated 8/10

I think this is the only proper death metal album on the entire list? And even still, this album marks Sepultura's shift towards groove and nu-metal (Although only really in the drumming here and there, it's not immediate).

While I liked Roots, that album was a bit overstuffed, and I'm not a huge fan of groove metal (Roots Bloody Roots is a great song). This album was definitely more up my alley. Songs like Dead Embryonic Cells and Altered State are great (Although the whole album is fantastic).

Really sounds like if Metallica had a competent drummer and decided they wanted to be death metal instead of thrash (Although Arise does contain elements of thrash. It's not quite as heavy as something from Death for example).

Great album though, although I do question it's inclusion. Roots definitely belongs on as their definitive album, but picking this album over including something like Death's Human or Symbolic, or a Morbid Angel album, or an Entombed album?

Rated 7/10
